Planning your LGBTQ2S+ wedding

You may be wondering if there are any special requirements or forms to make your marriage legal. Requirements tend to vary by county, so visit your local county clerk’s website to see a list of forms and fees you will need for filing. Generally, a marriage license requires a nominal filing fee and proof of identification (a driver’s license, state ID card, or passport). A marriage license is usually valid for 30 days, so you should file for this a few weeks ahead of your wedding date.

To be legally married in the state of Tennessee, you must obtain a marriage license. Getting your Tennessee marriage license is a quick and easy process. Here are the legal requirements:

- You must both be present

- You both must be 18+ years old.

- Valid driver’s license, state-issued photo ID, state ID card, or military ID passport for both parties.

- Valid social security card or proof of social security number for both parties.
- The license must be used within 30 days after being issued and can be used on the same day.

- If either of you have been divorced or widowed, you must know the exact date that the divorce or death occurred. A bride must also have a certified copy of the divorce decree if she had a name change but has not changed her name on her driver’s license.

- License must be used within 30 days of issuance.

For non-Tennessee residents it is: $41.00
For Tennessee residents it is: $101.00

The $60.00 will be waived if applicants complete a four hour premarital course and present a notarized certificate of completion, which can be obtained at the county office.
